Spicy Knight and Scarlet Splash
– A Foray into Fungi
Until recently, fungi were so unfamilar to most us that they didn’t have common names. Today, Spicy Knight and Scarlet Splash have helped shift fungi into the everyday vernacular and consciousness.
Although fungi are often maligned by gardeners, clandestine fungal networks beneath the soil provide vital supportive architecture. Many fungi form beneficial alliances with most plants, help to drought-proof gardens. Other fungi recycle organic matter, releasing locked-up nutrients. Progressive gardeners are searching for ways to help them flourish.
Between 2012 and 2016, ecologist and environmental photographer Alison Pouliot spent a thousand days in the forests of a dozen countries, to search for the answer to one question – why are fungi regarded so differently to other forms of life? The answers to that question feature in a series of stories in her new book, The Allure of Fungi.
Join us for this illustrated seminar to find out more about how fungi provide the vital links that underpin our functioning planet.
