Fungus Discovery Workshop
What are all those fungi doing out there in the landscape?
How do they support soils and contribute to ecosystem function?
This workshop introduces participants to the diversity, ecology and curiosities of the Kingdom Fungi, specific to fungi found in the region but also within wider Australian and global contexts.
It begins with an interactive session around a specimen table where we will explore the basics of fungus classification and identification, and you’ll get to handle and examine a range of different local fungi. We’ll discuss the importance of fungi in forests and woodlands, agricultural systems and other ecosystem types and how fungi can assist in land restoration.
We’ll also explore cultural aspects such as edibility and toxicity and the importance of fungi in biodiversity conservation.
After lunch we’ll head to the field and visit various local ecosystems to search for fungi of interest.
Participants are encouraged to bring along their own specimens for identification at the workshop.
Be sure to dress warmly!
Alison’s books Underground Lovers, The Allure of Fungi and Wild Mushrooming will also be available for purchase.
