Otways Forest

Mothers Day Mushroom Hunt

Throughout history, women have been the keepers of fungal lore. In the twelfth century, Benedictine abbess Hildegard von Bingen wrote about psychedelic fungi in a code that has never been deciphered. In Australia, Aboriginal women collect native truffles. Better known for her creation of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck, Beatrix Potter researched and produced hundreds of paintings of fungi. And fellas, when it comes to survival, it might pay to go bush with a woman, as women’s superior sense of smell including for sniffing out all sorts of things fungal might just save your life!

This workshop introduces participants to the fascinating natural and cultural histories of fungi. It begins with a ninety-minute interactive session on the basics of fungus identification. Participants will get to handle, examine and identify various fungi collected locally. We will then partake in an exciting two hour wander through the fungus-rich Otways forests to search for species of interest.

Why not treat Mum to a forest foray in search of fungi this Mothers’ Day!
