Fungi are diverse, delicious and sometimes deadly. With interest in foraging for wild food on the rise, learning to accurately identify fungi reduces both poisoning risk to humans and harm to the environment.
Five years in the making, authors Alison Pouliot and Tom May present Wild Mushrooming: A guide for foragers – the first guide to edible (and toxic) fungi in Australia. In the book the authors present the idea of ‘ecological foraging’ – an approach based on care, conservation and a deep understanding of ecosystem dynamics.
The timing is significant as it reflects growing mycological knowledge and the groundswell of interest in foraging for wild food. Wild Mushrooming provides an overview of how, where and when to find and identify fungi. Each species is extensively described, discussed and illustrated including information on the preparation and cooking of fungi, including recipes.
